Mercedes EGR Valve Fault – P0401 / P0400
System: Engine Management / Emissions
Component: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve
Typical Symptoms
• Engine warning light illuminated
• Reduced engine performance
• Rough running (in some cases)
• Increased emissions
Possible Cause
• Faulty EGR valve
• Carbon build-up blocking the valve
• EGR valve stuck open or closed
• Wiring or control fault
Diagnostic Insight
The EGR system recirculates exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce emissions.
If the flow is restricted or incorrect, the engine control unit will store fault codes such as P0401 or P0400.
Technicians usually check:
• EGR valve operation
• carbon build-up in the valve and passages
• live data for EGR flow
• wiring and control signals
In many cases, carbon build-up is the main cause, but the EGR valve itself may also fail.
Important Note
EGR faults are not always caused by a faulty valve.
Blocked passages or carbon deposits should be checked before replacing components.
Component Location
The EGR valve is located on the engine, connected between the exhaust and intake system.
⚠ Professional Diagnostic Recommended
EGR system faults require proper testing and inspection. The vehicle should be checked by a Mercedes-Benz dealer or qualified Mercedes specialist.
