Used DPF Cleaner But the Fault Is Still There? – Diagnostic Guide
DESCRIPTION

Used a DPF cleaner but the warning light or fault is still there? In many cases, the issue may not be the DPF itself but an underlying fault preventing the system from regenerating correctly.

DIAGNOSTIC INSIGHT

Mercedes DPF systems are designed to regenerate automatically when the engine and emissions systems are operating correctly.

If DPF faults continue after using cleaner products, the underlying issue may involve:

  • failed regeneration cycles
  • incorrect sensor readings
  • differential pressure sensor faults
  • exhaust temperature sensor faults
  • EGR or air mass sensor faults
  • interrupted driving conditions preventing successful regeneration

The engine control unit also requires a successful regeneration cycle to confirm soot levels have reduced correctly. If regeneration remains incomplete or aborted, soot calculations and DPF warning messages may continue to remain active.

Before replacing or removing DPF components, live diagnostic testing should be carried out to identify the root cause of the fault.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Mercedes DPF systems are designed to clean themselves through regeneration under correct operating conditions. Repeated DPF faults usually indicate an underlying issue affecting regeneration rather than the DPF itself requiring removal or replacement.
